What are Brain and Behavioral Sciences?

BRAIN SCIENCES

Brain sciences refer to the study of the brain and the nervous system. This includes fields such as neuroscience, neurobiology, chemistry, neuroengineering and computer science.

BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES

Behavioral science is the branch of science that relates to the study of human and animal behavior and interactions. It involves multiple fields such as sociology, psychology and cognitive science.

The following are some of the fields of study that fall under the umbrella of brain and behavioral sciences:

COGNITIVE SCIENCE
Cognitive science is the study of how people think. Cognitive scientists try to understand the thought processes that the mind uses and how they are developed and executed.

NEUROBIOLOGY
Neurobiologists study the inner workings of cells and neurons that contribute to the function of the nervous system.

NEUROENGINEERING
Neuroengineering is a relatively new field in which researchers aim to model cognitive (thought) and neural (brain) systems using computers. By creating computer systems that act the way the mind and brain do, neuroengineers can advance artificial intelligence and biomedical solutions.

NEUROSCIENCE
Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system. This includes studying the brain, nerves, and spinal cord, as well as how these and other parts of the nervous system impact behavior, perception, and thought.

PSYCHIATRY
Psychiatry is the study of mental disorders and their treatments.

PSYCHOLINGUISTICS
Psycholinguistics is the study of how language systems develop, how language affects human behavior and vice versa.

PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology is the study of the mind, brain and behavior. Psychology uses the scientific method to understand how people and other animals think, act, and feel.

PSYCHONEUROIMMUNOLOGY
Psychoneuroimmunology is an interdisciplinary field in which people study how the nervous and immune systems work together to affect their own functions as well as the behavior of humans and other animals.

SOCIOLOGY
Sociology is the study of society, institutions, diverse community interactions and human social relationships.
